Shortt signs Pension Transparency pledge and calls on Schamore to do the same..

Hardinsburg KY (TW Shortt For State Representative) . TW Shortt announced on September 24th 2016 that he has signed the Bluegrass Institute for Public Solutions' Legislative Transparency Pledge and called on Dean Schamore to do the same.

“The state employee and teacher pension system are underfunded and lost money in the market last year. Many beneficiaries are worried there may be nothing left for them when they retire. “ said Shortt. Meanwhile , the legislative pension system is fully funded and doing well in the market.

“Despite fully funding their own retirement fund and ignoring their obligations to public employees, House democrats have refused to let Kentuckian know what they stand to collect when they retire”, said Shortt. The Democratic chairman of the committee that handles the pension system told reporters in reference to legislative pension transparency , “frankly, I don’t think that’s the public’s business.”

“We have short changed the hardworking Kentuckian who serve the commonwealth,” said Shortt. “The least we can do is be open and honest about the benefits elected officials have voted for themselves. I’m proud to sign the pledge and hope my opponent will as well so the voters have some confidence that whoever wins will go to Frankfort to represent the people and not enrich themselves”

On the heels of a new report, TW Shortt said state lawmakers have protected their own pension while failing to meet their obligations to state employees.  The statement comes after a legislative committee heard an update on the performance of state pension investment funds over the past year.

“The numbers show that lawmakers have been take care of themselves while failing to help retirees,” said TW Shortt.  “We need leaders in Frankfort who recognize the system is broken and are willing to do something about it.”

Numbers presented to the Public Pension Oversight Board on Monday showed that the Kentucky Retirement System (KRS) pension fund, which covers state and local Government employees, lost 0.52% over the past fiscal year.  Legislator pensions are held in a separate fund, increased 3.51% last year over the same period.

Due to underfunding by the legislature in past budgets, the KRS currently only has money to meet 17% of its obligations, down from 19% last year despite the commitment of nearly $2 Billion for the fund in Matt Bevin’s first budget as Governor.  The legislative pension system, on the other hand, is fully funded to meet its commitments.

“We don’t need to return another self-serving legislator to Frankfort who will continue to vote to pad his own pockets while ignoring working families,” said Short.  “I’m running to give the people a voice in the Capitol.

Most folks agree that Institutional corruption has set in at the  Kentucky General Assembly and this needs changing. It’s hurting Kentucky Families , it’s hurting the Kentucky Economy and it’s time to take action. Who we send to Frankfort matters and it’s past time to elect someone that will fight for Kentucky Families.

Shortt will be joined by key community leaders at each event and will conduct a question and answer section at the end of the event.
